Branching Scenarios: A Complete Guide to Interactive Learning Masterclass

Map, write, and build branching that adapts to your learners, with AI doing the heavy lifting

About this masterclass

What this session covers

Branching scenarios are the gold standard for practising soft skills, and they are notoriously hard to build. Between mapping logic spiderwebs and writing authentic dialogue for every possible outcome, many designers give up and go back to linear content. This masterclass takes you from a simple concept to a working branched experience, using AI to generate the dialogue, choices, and consequences that would normally take days to write. You build your own scenario during the session.

This masterclass is practical and hands-on rather than technical. Over 2 hours of live virtual instruction you will work through the outcomes below, using one decision or conversation your learners find genuinely difficult as the raw material.

Learning outcomes

You’ll leave able to

  • Recognize where branching earns its place: decision scenarios, and adaptive paths that change content by role, location, or prior knowledge.
  • Structure a decision tree with a beginner-friendly framework that engages learners without becoming unmanageable.
  • Use AI to generate realistic dialogue, difficult choices, and meaningful consequences, then edit them until they sound like your learners’ workplace.
  • Go from prompt to prototype, turning AI-generated content into a working, clickable scenario.
  • Apply engagement techniques so the scenario builds real skill rather than simply collecting clicks.

Audience

Who it is for

People who want learners to practise decisions, not just read about them:

  • Instructional designers and eLearning developers
  • Compliance, ethics, and safety training designers
  • Leadership and soft-skills program owners
  • Customer service and sales enablement trainers
  • Trainers who teach through cases
  • Anyone who has given up on branching and gone back to linear content

Less suitable for participants seeking advanced authoring-tool programming (variables, triggers, or JavaScript).

Tools

Tools used

Platform-agnostic, adaptable to your approved AI environment and authoring tool. For hands-on activities, bring a browser-based assistant:

  • ChatGPT
  • Microsoft Copilot
  • Google Gemini
  • Claude
  • Another approved platform

No specific authoring tool is required. You keep the session prompt pack and a scenario workbook.

Before you join

Prerequisites

No programming, data-science, or technical AI development experience is required. Participants should:

  • Have a basic understanding of generative AI
  • Ideally have access to an organization-approved AI account
  • Bring a laptop for hands-on activities
  • Come prepared with one decision or conversation your learners find genuinely difficult
  • Use only non-confidential, anonymized, or organization-approved information during activities
